Lightwoods Primary Academy Marks 80th Anniversary of VE Day

Lightwoods Primary Academy has marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a series of heartfelt commemorations, honouring the end of the Second World War in Europe and reflecting on its enduring significance for generations since.

As pupils arrived at school, they were welcomed by the nostalgic wartime melodies of national icon Vera Lynn, whose voice came to symbolise hope and unity during the darkest days of conflict. The sound of classics such as We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover played across both school sites, setting a poignant and reflective tone for a day rooted in remembrance.

From the brave service men and women, to the evacuated children and families who kept the home front going, their stories of resilience, sacrifice and unity remain deeply inspiring. The day’s events helped pupils connect with these experiences in a meaningful way.

Special assemblies were held at both the Castle Road East and Clent Road sites, where staff and pupils reflected on the historical importance of VE Day, remembering, learning from, and passing on the stories of those who secured the freedoms we enjoy today.

Children explored the events leading up to the war’s end, the challenges faced by communities during wartime and the lasting impact on British society. Teachers shared stories, showed historical footage and encouraged pupils to ask questions, sparking a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made.

The day concluded with a picnic on the school fields, where pupils and staff gathered under the recent spring sunshine to share food and enjoy each other’s company in a spirit of community. Dressed in red, white and blue, many children waved handmade flags and wore paper poppies they had crafted earlier in the week, echoing the vibrant street parties held in 1945.

John Ashton, Associate Principal at Lightwoods Primary Academy, commented: “Marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day is about more than remembering history; it’s about honouring the resilience and sacrifice of those that helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today.

“By helping our pupils understand the significance of this moment, we’re passing on vital lessons in unity, community spirit, and the value of peace. These are timeless values that help shape the citizens they are becoming and must never be forgotten.”

Lightwoods Primary Academy’s thoughtful tribute ensured that the message of VE Day, one of peace, gratitude and remembrance, resonated strongly, 80 years after the guns of war fell silent across Europe.
